No spoilers ahead!
Originally, I didn't have big expectations for "Guardians of the Galaxy" because I knew nothing about the lore. However, I wasn't disappointed. Let me explain.
Let me start with acting. In "Guardians of the Galaxy", there is an ensemble with Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Vin Diesel as Groot, and Dave Bautista as Drax. I can easily say that each of them is extraordinary in their role. All of the ensemble is perfectly cast, especially Vin Diesel, who fits his role exceptionally well as a talking tree with limited vocabulary. Also, Bradley Cooper steals the show in each scene he's in with his role as Rocket, who seamlessly switches scenes from drama or action into comedy.
Another great part about this latest Marvel movie is the plot: there is next to none. The story is almost a copy of what happened in "The Avengers" which is a very simple concept: very powerful item is in the hero's possession and they need to protect it from the bad guys. This time, it's a group of heroes, just like in "The Avengers", but they are obvious misfits, and seeing them cooperate is the most entertaining aspect of "Guardians of the Galaxy". The relationships between Peter, Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax can range from entertaining to comedic to dramatic to thrilling.
One of the most surprising aspects of "Guardians of the Galaxy" were the visuals. Not only James Gunn provided great direction, but the CGI was very lifelike. The effects behind Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax seem real and very detailed. Also, the action action was amazing: it's very fast paced and has a humongous scale.
However, "Guardians of the Galaxy" doesn't always focus on following the butterflies, and there was one big flaw to the movie that could have taken away from the entire experience: the villain. Whereas in "The Avengers" there was Loki: a very interesting bad guy with a twist, our villain called Ronan has no redeeming qualities as a character. He has no personality, motives, or humor displayed throughout, which was very disappointing compared to great comic book movie villains such as the Joker, Loki, and Doc Oc.
Overall, if you haven't yet seen "Guardians of the Galaxy" in theaters yet and intend on doing doing the future: now is the chance, it's been open for almost a month. I can easily recommend it for every good aspect, but the terrible villain almost ruined the movie. Luckily, great characters, humor, and action make sure that there will be a sequel.
8.5/10
+Lot's of hilarious moments
+Great bonding between the ensemble
+No plot used as an advantage
+Top of the line acting
-Really below average villain
