When Comic-Con was around this summer, I didn't give much attention towards Gotham. I only read that it's going to be a prequel to the Batman movies centered around the rise of Commissioner Jim Gordon. Now that the show has aired and I watched it, here is my review.
To me, the most striking part about viewing Gotham is the amazing acting. Every actor portrays their characters quite well. However, Robin Lord Taylor stole the show as Oswald Cobblepot, who was intense as the Penguin. Bruce Wayne also appears in the series while he is a child, and he is portrayed by child actor named David Mazouz, who fitted the role perfectly.
The story in the pilot is about Jim Gordon with his paired partner, Harvey Bullock, investigating the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, while stumbling across the gang of Fish Mooney, a new character, who is under control of the mob boss Carmine Falcone.
In my opinion, the plot was masterfully executed with lots of breathtaking action, consisting of mainly gunfights. Fish Mooney really made Gotham seem edgier than it is and added a sense of surprise, as you don't know what she is planning. Also, a lot of people who later become villains were shown in the pilot, such as Edward Nygma, Selina Kyle, and Oswald Cobblepot.
Another great part about Gotham is the beautiful and expertly done cinematography, which blends the dark take of Gotham City from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy along with some over-the-top elements from the two Tim Burton Batman movies.
I can't wait for future episodes of Gotham, since this pilot is very promising. Overall, I enjoyed everything about this pilot.
9/10
+What can I say? I can't think of a better way to start off a Batman prequel series
-A bit too long
Make sure to stick around, since later today I'll review the season 18 premiere of South Park.
